"Praise the Lord with the Lyre; sing unto Him with instruments of strings. Sing unto Him a new song; play skillfully with a resounding noise." Psalms 33:2,3
This rousing verse defines our purpose and our mission:
To provoke the unsaved through contemporary music and engaging dialogue; and, to challenge and inspire the church body through inspirational music and collective worship.
DivineINTERVENTION presents a mix of band originals, cover songs and contemporary arrangements of popular hymns and choruses to advance an atmosphere of worship and contemplation. Our Classic Rock style is influenced by Pop, Jazz, Southern Rock and Hard Country. The majority of our repertoire includes cutting edge originals and the Lord continues to bless us with an endless stream of new material to present in His service.
Here's a little history of DivineINTERVENTION:
In 1996, " DivineINTERVENTION " was just a concept in the mind of band founder Ken Brower. His goal was to establish a new type of Christian contemporary band -- a band firmly aimed at praising our Lord Jesus Christ in song and capable of delivering a powerful evangelical message.
Ken had been playing with fellow band members Tom Gvoth and Keith Mandra since 1991 in Grace Bible Church's praise ensemble band. In 1995 Austin Fiore started attending the same church and also started to participate in the ensemble. In November 1997, Ken penned a letter to Tom, Keith and Austin explaining his vision and suggested they form a new Christian band. In January 1998, the group met for dinner to establish their goals, determine their musical venue and form a bond of Christian brotherhood. The newly formed band left the dinner table with a mission and plenty of drive and inspiration. The new band project was underway! Austin started singing all of the lead vocals while the others added background vocals and harmonies. The rhythm section was made up of Tom on drums/percussion and Keith on bass. Ken and Austin added their acoustic and electric guitars into the mix and took turns on lead guitar.
The group began working on material they were familiar with. This decision has provided the band with a collection of popular choruses and hymns presented in unique arrangements. As time progressed, the band developed their own unique sound, influenced by Hard Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz, Latin and Bluegrass musical styles. All of these influences have been combined into what is now known as DivineINTERVENTION.
The group later realized that they were blessed with the ability to write, arrange and develop new original material. To date, more than ten original songs have been written and performed at various venues -- and more and more new material continues to be produced.
Throughout 1999 and 2000, the guys prayed about adding another member to the band to possibly sing lead vocals, play keyboards and percussion. The Lord answered their prayers and, in addition, added His own divine twist. In the summer of 2000, He brought Jamie West to the band. Jamie, a talented musician and instrumentalist, fit right into the mix. Primarily a violinist, Jamie added another dimension to the band's already unique sound. Jamie also plays the piano, keyboard and sings bass. Additionally, Ken and Tom came to the forefront and started singing lead vocals on various songs to diversify the band's vocal aspect.
The band continues to be developed by His "divine intervention". Speaking of divine intervention, in case you were wondering about the origin of the name, well, it all happened one Friday night in 1999. During rehearsal tear down, the guys were commenting on how their version of "Amazing Grace" came together that night. Ken responded to the group: "It must be divine intervention because we can't come up with this stuff on our own". It was at this point that the guys had found a name for the band and ministry.
On April 28, 2001 the members of DivineINTERVENTION and Divine Intervention Music Ministries were dedicated to the service of the Lord. Fans, friends and loved ones gathered at Grace Bible Church in New Jersey to support the band and their decision to reach the lost through their music ministry.
Mark DeBoer from WMCA Christian Radio in NY was on hand as the MC for the evening. Challenges were given by Jake Smith, a long time friend of the band; Al Brower, Ken Brower's dad; and Dave Huizing, a good friend and missionary with Word of Life Ministries.
John Podgurski led the prayer to dedicate the band and the member's spouses to the ministry of the Lord. John's relationship to the band is quite interesting. John heard the guys preparing for rehearsal one night while bringing his son to a Christian youth program at our church. He sat in with the group during their pre-rehearsal prayer time and then listened to the music. John liked what he heard so he arranged for the band to play at The Overflowing Cup Café in Hackensack, NJ. This was DI's first opportunity to play at a coffeehouse. John has since become an avid supporter of the ministry and a good friend.
As dedicated vessels unto the Lord, DivineINTERVENTION'S desire is to spread the message of Jesus Christ and to sing His praises!
